Education Path for a Neurosurgeon

By: Lucine Avanesian

What is a neurosurgeon?

A neurosurgeon, often known as a neurological surgeon, is a highly trained doctor who specializes in brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerve, and cerebrovascular surgery. Congenital brain abnormalities, traumas, malignancies, vascular disorders, infections, stroke, and degenerative spinal diseases are all treated by neurosurgeons.

How to become a neurosurgeon?

A neurosurgeon's education is comprehensive and difficult, requiring at least 4 years of undergraduate study → 4 years of medical school → 5 to 7 years of fellowship training.

Neurosurgeons must practice for several years after acquiring their state medical license before becoming eligible for board certification by the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS).
